Head of Research and Development – SA1459

Our client is a full-services reinsurer that meets a wide range of life and health needs. They are looking for an experienced senior Qualified Actuary to lead the actuarial research and development activities in their Pricing team. This broad role is responsible for setting and maintaining the pricing basis for all key product lines as well as providing actuarial research on emerging trends. 

Candidates who are interested should have at least 15 years’ Life Assurance experience. You must also have experience in developing pricing or valuations basis for life risk products. You must be able to work with large data sets using SQL, R and Python and have experience in using data visualisation systems such as Tableau and Power BI. You should have strong investigative, analytical and problem-solving skills. You must have highly advanced oral and written professional communication skills, while leading and developing an effective team. You must be able to liaise with individuals across a variety of operational, functional and technical disciplines. 

Responsibilities will include: 

• Developing, maintaining and executing an efficient and effective basis of a development framework for the company’s key product lines. 
• Performing technical and strategic actuarial research that supports various internal clients and elevates the company’s research capabilities externally. 
• Collaborating with the appointed function to understand the emerging performance of the deals on the books and recommend appropriate strategic actions. 
• Collaborating with the appointed teams to ensure that the South Africa office has access to appropriate tools and expertise. 
• Collaborating with the regional pricing actuary to ensure that basis development proposals are well considered.
