Looking back at what was a historic 2020:

2020 was marked by the global shock of Covid-19. Imagine a world where there are no hugs, no handshakes, no high fives, where everyone wears masks, office buildings and schools are closed for months. A year ago, this would have been regarded as pure fiction, but such was the reality of this past year.

The Covid-19 crisis is still ongoing and continues to present significant uncertainties for 2021, yet, the glimmers of hope are starting to appear, with lower daily infection rates, news of hospitals reporting zero COVID patients and the start of the vaccine rollout.

Recruitment in 2020 was different to anything we have ever experienced. We had our ups and downs, but throughout 2020 we remained committed to partnering with you, our clients, to find new and creative recruitment solutions to complex challenges, weathering this storm, and looking ahead to remain the trusted name in actuarial recruitment in South Africa.

We are grateful that we had an amazing start to 2021 and the actuarial job market has picked up significantly. Whether you have a critical vacancy or looking for your perfect next move, please put us to the test.

The SA3 App & Jakes Gerwel Technical High School in Bonnievale:

With over 800 actuaries and students that have already downloaded the SA3 App, it continues to show that the SA3 App will play a significant role in the future of actuarial recruitment in South Africa. While we still see daily new registrations on the SA3 App, we have identified some areas where the App can be improved further, and the vision is that there will be a newer and better version of the App showcased at this year’s convention.

With the launch of the App, we committed that, for each valid App registration, we would donate R250 towards the Jakes Gerwel Technical High School in Bonnievale, a community project close to our hearts. It brings us great joy to share the news that we have recently donated equipment in excess of R100,000 for the new classrooms and a further R100,000 in cash to the school, all thanks to you, the actuarial community.

Salary Survey:

The 2020 Salary survey was concluded at the start of February and shared with respondents. The results were based on data collected via the SA3 App over a period of around 4 months, starting at the 2020 ASSA Convention in October and ending in January 2021. The impact of COVID 19 on the local and global economies was severe and we saw how that filtered through to also impact actuarial salaries and in particular bonus expectations.

If you were unable to participate in the survey and you wish to benefit from the insights from our report, please let us know, and we will gladly share the report with you.

We encourage you to download our App to ensure that you are able to benefit from its several exciting features and services, including the management of your recruitment profile in an easy and fun way and the participation in future surveys.

Career Opportunities:

There are very encouraging signs in the market with more and more roles becoming available every week. We have a significant number of vacant roles that we are working on and the demand for actuarial skills remain healthy for particularly experienced students and actuaries.

Covid-19 seems to have had the most severe impact on the Graduate recruitment market and we have a long list of excellent actuarial Graduates still looking for their first jobs. Please reach out to us if you need some junior resources. We would also welcome any suggestions on how we can work together as a profession to help these young professionals get valuable first experience.
